Talk pages were basically for those who moved from wikipedia to the wikia system. The wikia system was created basically in the wake of wikipedia politics, which began kicking in 2002 seriously. I joined the One Piece wiki purely because the greater wikipedia anime staff took over things and forced us to comply with their rules. Those rules only worked in certain instances, but did not work in all of them. For example, we were told we had to use the 4Kids dub names, but we told them thats fine... But 4Kids didn't cover the entire series and had only gone up to the Alabastra arc and had not even reached Little Garden. the series was a good couple of arcs ahead with the Ends Lobby arc approaching.

Wikipedia, anyway, uses "talk" pages and since most wikians were coming from wikipedia we had a similar set up to them here in the wikias.

I do prefer the talk pages, but I'm not against change either, to me its just I don't agree with them all. I mean I turned comment sections on to get us talking as I said, so I *know* there are problems with talk pages. They are less convenient for newbie editors and because they use wiki coding usually involve you both putting effort to edit the page and knowing what to do to begin with.

I've accepting a while back that things were done differently in my era for a reason. The big migration from wikipedia, thats been and gone now and it 2019, not 2002. I just never liked walls as I find that comments get easily lost and talk pages you can organise how you want.
