"Gekkou" is a collab song by Harumaki Gohan and Tatsuya Kitani (Konnichiwa Tanita-san) featuring Hatsune Miku and Kagamine Rin. It was commissioned for the unit Vivid BAD SQUAD from the game Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! feat. Hatsune Miku.
As a collaboration song, Gekkou exhibits the two producers' perspectives towards their own creative works, with the flower-headed man representing Tatsuya Kitani, and the blue-eyed girl representing Harumaki Gohan.
One of the prevalent themes of Gekkou is the self-expressions of the two artists: their anguish and confusion towards their own crafts and their identities. Initially establishing their artistic career out of honest enthusiasm, in order to gain recognition, they would subconsciously imitate the creations of successful predecessors; and as their songs take shape, they also gradually lose the trace of their individuality - instead existing only as patchworks of other people's styles. As their repeated acts of imitation continue, the two would fall into constant loneliness and begin to doubt their identity as artists, expressing regret and disappointment at how their crafts and individuality have strayed from their initial ideals, never managed to reach their "moonlight". The imagery of "moonlight" here represents an ideal belief, a concept that is out of reach, something that can be described as "perfection". All the while mocking themselves, both characters can be seen expressing their admiration towards the other's individual style. As the two of them finally come face-to-face and piece together their ideals, their loneliness would be soothen by their similar line of thoughts; their combined artistry, along with their influences on the other, would be the source of encouragement for the continued pursuit of their dream.
It can also be interpreted from the lyrics that each person doesn't need to feel envy towards anyone else - everyone is a lonesome talent themselves, and each has their own ideals (moonlight) they desire to reach upon. However, only by combining our strength and influencing each other positively, that we manage to break the cycle of seclusion and gain more confidence in ourselves. This interpretation reflects the beliefs and characterization of Shinonome Akito, the character of whom the song was commissioned in mind of and who was the focus of the event the song is tied to.
This song has entered the Hall of Legend and surpassed a million views on YouTube. Harumaki Gohan and Tatsuya Kitani have also uploaded a Self-Cover.
