Background[]

"Dante" is a song featuring Hatsune Miku by R Sound Design and is featured in his albums Zekkei Mahou and Delights. It is a love song based on Dante's Divine Comedy.

The song explores the gradually depressive mental state of the singer, who refers to the object of their affection as "you" and the sole intriguing, pure existence among the mundane world they are so tired of. As they find themselves increasingly on the verge of insanity with the melancholic passing days, the singer beseeches "you" to take them away to an unknown, decadent world, who gladly accepts; the two of them ultimately indulge in their self-proclaimed sins and corrupt love together as they close their eyes, hands held, and descend to the Underworld with no hope of return.

Allusions to Divine Comedy are prevalent throughout the lyrics; its perspective can be attributed to Dante, who is the protagonist. "You" is implied to be Beatrice, the woman who Dante is enamored with and guides him through Heaven, embodying love and purity. There are several instances of reference to the literary piece, such as the mentions of "magic" and "curse" colored in red, blue, and white; the Mediterranean region Ibiza, which reflects the imagery of Purgatory as an island situated within the sea of Hell; the "forest without a way out," which corresponds with the one in the source symbolizing deviation from salvation. Contrary to its source of inspiration in which Dante finds salvation, the song takes a turn as the two individuals eventually fall in disgrace. Instead of succumbing to God's will and be showered in collective divine love in Heaven, the singer and "you" choose to submit to their selfish love toward each other, astray from the way to Heaven, which becomes the referred to act of sin that results in their descent into the depths of Hell. The mention of "baile" in the sea near Ibiza and Andalusia, the origin of flamenco which is shown in the music video, further highlights their voluntary hedonism.[1]

This song has entered the Hall of Fame.
