Amy, Chris, Kaori, and Ken are a set of VOCALOIDs developed and distributed by Yamaha Corporation. They make up the four starter vocals of the VOCALOID5 engine and were released in July 2018. Amy and Chris are English-capable VOCALOIDs while Kaori and Ken are Japanese-capable VOCALOIDs. They replace the VY series, which previously acted as the main "standard" VOCALOIDs.
Their voice providers have not been revealed.
Concept[]
According to Gizmodo, the four take on a human-like approach, though they did express concerns that they did not seem "VOCALOID-like".[2]
They are the third and current set of "standard" voices to be released after Yamaha developed MEIKO and KAITO (VOCALOID) and then the VY series (VOCALOID2 to VOCALOID4).
Etymology[]
For the English vocals, "Amy" is the English form of the old French name "Amée" (modern French: Aimée) meaning "beloved". It is a vernacular form of the Latin word "Amata".[3][4] "Chris" is a name that is usually the short form of "Christopher", which comes from Greek origin and means "Christ-bearer", or "Christian", meaning "follower of Christ".[5] "Chris" could also be a name of its own, though it's uncommon. Chris's name origin has not been clarified by Yamaha.
Regarding the Japanese vocals Kaori and Ken, no official information was released regarding why their names were chosen or what they may mean. Their names were also written in romaji only, giving no further details.
Appearance[]
Unlike the previous VY series and later SARAH, ALLEN, HARUKA, and AKITO, Amy, Chris, Kaori, and Ken have full character designs. The four use a 1990s 3D art style to represent them, with low polygon limits giving them an angular appearance and very little or no textures on their models. In most instances of their given images, their four models appear with random triangles to give the 3D models a fragmented or corrupted appearance.
Amy has brown skin, dark brown neck-length hair, and wears a gray chain-strap minidress and medium-dark gray open-toe ankle strap heels. Chris has brown skin, a medium-dark brown buzz cut, a very dark brown extended goatee, and wears a dark gray short-sleeved T-shirt, black pants, and medium-dark gray shoes with lace cages in two lighter gray shades and dark gray shoelaces. Kaori has light skin, dark gray mid-length hair, and wears a white strap top, dark gray pants, and what appear to be gray heels. Ken has light skin, medium-dark brown ear-length hair, and wears a gray jacket, a white top, medium-dark gray pants, and dark gray shoes with partly curved line details in a lighter medium-dark gray shade. Each character model wears a basic necklace that matches the color of the background they're presented on. Amy's is pink, Chris's is blue, Kaori's is orange, and Ken's is green. Amy also wears pink hoop earrings.
History[]
Marketing[]
The 4 vocals were marketed as being exclusive vocals that come with the VOCALOID5 engine itself. No matter which of the two options that a buyer chooses, they would end up with the 4 vocals.
