History[]

On October 16, 2025, Yamaha Corporation published a video to social media titled "Who am I ?", which introduced viewers to a mysterious, ghostly-like character. The youthful character was shown against various real-life scenery depicting time between late night and early morning, sometimes as a full figure, othertimes as a partially-disappearing, incomplete being with body parts either showing up translucent, transparent, or vanishing altogether. Near the end of the video, the character was heard saying with a faint voice "asa" (あさ), hence the character's name was established to be "asa"; the VOCALOID logo was also shown at the end, suggesting that the "asa" was going to be an upcoming brand-new vocal, although no mention of a specific VOCALOID engine was given.[1][2]

Immediately after the video went public, Yamaha launched a website aiming to organize and share information about the "asa". There, Yamaha encouraged users, especially creators, to share new sightings or information about "asa" on social media through the designated hashtag "#asasightings (#asa目撃情報)";[3] most of these new "sightings" were actually fanarts of "asa" drawn by the creators themselves, who were hyped by the new character and potential new VOCALOID. When inquired by a Yamaha representative, DTM STATION noted that "There are still many unknown aspects about asa, and we are currently investigating the truth."[4]

On October 20, Yamaha globally launched version 2.0.1 of the mobile application Mobile VOCALOID Editor (albeit using the label "version 2.0.0"), switching from its original one-time-payment model to a new monthly-subscription system.[5][6] "asa" was advertised to be bundled into the redesigned app as a new free starter voicebank based on VOCALOID:AI technology, the first of its kind on the then-ten-year-old mobile platform; it was described as a standard vocal featuring a "delicate, transparent singing style".[7][8][9] Creators started to publish songs (mostly works in progress or short songs) with asa, which were also being tagged with "#asa目撃情報" as new sightings of it.

On November 29, Yamaha retweeted a photograph taken by a VOCALOID user during the event THE VOC@LOiD M@STER 61. The photo depicted a laptop computer at the official VOCALOID booth, running the VOCALOID6 Editor on its screen; there, the Editor was shown as having "asa" installed as a voicebank there, and the #asa目撃情報 tag was affixed to the tweet to mark it as a new "asa sighting".[10] This suggested that asa, which until that point was considered a voicebank exclusive to the Mobile VOCALOID Editor, was preparing to be released for the regular VOCALOID6 engine, although no precise date was given.

On December 3, the VOCALOID6 Editor was updated to version 6.10.0. Among its new features, the most notable one was the inclusion of asa as a new starter vocal within the engine.[11] It was made available for use to every VOCALOID6 Editor user, regardless of whether they had bought the editor as the usual bundle with the Silhouette Series (as sold through the VOCALOID SHOP) or as part of a Starter Pack with any other voicebank sold by Yamaha or any other company.
