Alice in Black, previously known as A. Maya, is a female American producer and songwriter who specializes in pop and rock. She also usually makes drawings for her music videos. All of her songs are in English and she has used several Engloids. Many of her earlier works were self covered with different VOCALOIDs. Recently, she has been focusing on experimenting with other synthesizers: Chiptune's Lady_Parsec, Alter/Ego's Daisy, and Eleanor Forte of Synthesizer V.

As of 2023, most of her accounts were deleted and all her songs are unavailable.

However, as of March 2024 she has created a new Youtube Channel, Bandcamp and Tumblr account, and is planning on coming back from hiatus soon. She has redubbed herself "Alice in Black".

She cleared up misinformation about her music career and why she deleted her music and social media in the comments section of her new video saying,

"I've seen a few misconceptions about this song and my hiatus, so I thought it would be a good time to clarify some things :)

I wasn't bullied or harassed over this song, and JustOneGlitch's video had very little to do with me privating this song or the rest of my music. There were many reasons I left the community. I'll try to be brief because every single time I type this out, it turns into an essay lol.

Between 2016 and 2018, I just didn't have time to make music. I had a lot going on in my personal life, then I started working an extremely stressful job. In 2019, I met my boyfriend. Music, art, and writing are all deeply private things to me. I can't make anything creative if I'm not completely isolated in my bedroom (which just isn't feasible in a relationship, especially when you live together). Working on music around my bf (even 5 years later!!) is low-key distressing.

Just to clarify (because this is the internet), this is not a him issue, it's a me issue. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time with someone who thought it was funny to insult me (and my art) to get a reaction. Unfortunately, he wasn't the only one. Even though my bf has been so supportive, I just can't let my guard down. Especially after one of my songs were put on a worst songs list lol.In 2020, I left my stressful job. I took some time out to write a novel. In the meantime, I wanted to come back to producing (now that I had some private time). I wasn't happy/satisfied with my old music, so I was going to rebrand and then slowly remake and re-release the old content. So here's where I fucked up: I made a twitter. There was so much toxicity on that platform (not involving me personally) that I reached a point where I was like, "Okay, I'm done. If this is the community, I don't care to be part of it."

At that point, my music was already private (because of the plans to rebrand). I didn't care to make things public again because

1. I thought no one would notice or care

2. twitter put me in a really bad headspace. After being exposed to that kind of toxicity, I did NOT want to manage channel comments

3. Between being forgotten or leaving a legacy of bad songs, I would've rather been forgotten.

I posted bad music with the intention of taking my listeners on a journey of improvement. But if my demos were never going to get "better," then I didn't want them to represent me (and my career) as a whole. Over the past month, I've been reading a lot of comments left on videos about Spinster, my vocadb profile, and various song entries. I'm genuinely touched that anyone wants these songs to come back. My philosophy has always been to release songs whether I was happy with them or not. What I think is garbage might resonate with someone else. Even though I wasn't proud of Spinster, I'm amazed (and honestly shocked) that there are people out there who want it found. I honestly thought more people would be glad that it was lost lol.

For years, I've wanted to come back to making music. But I would always come up with some excuse for why I couldn't. After seeing all the comments on Spinster reuploads and covers, I feel a lot better. What I saw on twitter was just normal twitter toxicity. I'm currently making plans to release new music.Another misconception I want to address is that Spinster was a vent song. It wasn't.

Spinster is a horror song about an abuse tactic I'd noticed a long time ago, but I don't see talked about a lot. What happens with this abuse tactic is the victim (usually female) starts making preparations to leave a toxic relationship, so the abuser (usually male) keeps them in the relationship by promising marriage. Some men will string women on for years with the promise of a marriage, only to get angry when the topic is later brought up. But whenever the victim threatens to leave or appears to be making preparations, the abuser will invoke the sunk-cost fallacy by reminding them of a wedding that they know will never come.

Spinster is written from the viewpoint of someone who was conditioned to fear spinsterhood and seek marriage regardless of the cost. The botched lover's suicide is a metaphor for marriage to an abuser: both are social constructs rooted in ideals of eternal love. But the marriage between an abuser and their victim is a corruption of those ideals, much like a lover's suicide where someone is "[left] to die, alone, the rope coming undone."

As a horror song about dread, tragedy, and suicide, it was written like a theatric piece as a nod to the suicides of Ophelia and Juliet. Which is why Prima was the original vocalist for this song :) She just can't handle fast notes very well, so the singer was later changed to Ruby."

She continued to explain problems with tuning when making the original song, and a planned remake of the song for July, along with a new album.
