History[]

2024[]

On August 1, 2024, along with the announcement of the PIAPRO CHARACTERS SUPER PACK for Piapro Studio and VOCALOID4, Crypton Future Media, Inc. announced the development of an AI voicebank for Hatsune Miku to be released for VOCALOID6 in 2024 as well as a new update for Hatsune Miku NT.[1][2]

On November 22, during an interview with Crypton's president Hiroyuki Itoh and International Business Team manager Miyu Fuse (who oversees Crypton's overseas operations), it was quietly stated that Hatsune Miku V6 AI would be releasing in 2025,[3] rather than 2024 as originally announced. This was later made official by Crypton via a SONICWIRE Blog on December 26, when the "Hatsune Miku V6 AI Planning and Development Team", led by Takamichi Koizumi, issued a press release delaying the release of Miku V6 AI to sometime in 2025, citing "development reasons"; the team encountered "some issues that are difficult to overcome at present" while continuing development of the voicebank and concluded "after consulting with YAMAHA" that it would "take some time before we can deliver a stable singing voice that is characteristic of Miku". As for the new release date, they stated they were "currently working on it with the goal of sometime in 2025" before closing the press release with their "sincerest apologies" "to everyone who was looking forward to the release of" Miku V6 AI "for the inconvenience and concern that this postponement has caused".[4][5] YAMAHA quote-retweeted the statement the same day.[6]

2025[]

On March 19, 2025, one day after the release of Piapro Studio NT2 and Hatsune Miku NT (Ver.2), Crypton tweeted that development of her V6 was "finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel" along with an apology for the long wait.[7] Yamaha later followed up with its own tweet where they said Miku V6's voice tuning quality was "reaching its climax" when its development progress was going steady, then asked fans to "please wait for a while now."[8]

Coinciding with Hatsune Miku's 18th anniversary on August 31, during Piapro TV's live broadcast of her "Magical Mirai 2025" Virtual Singer Product Related Stage, employees from Crypton Future Media, Inc. announced that Hatsune Miku V6 AI would be releasing within the first half of 2026 as Japanese and English voice libraries with future plans to also include support for Chinese. A limited-time demo version was announced to be provided free of charge to existing users later in 2025. Hatsune Miku V6 AI was announced to be released with a Starter Pack bundled with VOCALOID6 Editor and standalone options, and both versions were announced to be available as packaged editions.[9] A total of two demonstrations were shown during the stream, using a test version of her voicebank titled "MIKU_V6AI_TEST_250806" to cover "Prism", a song shown the month prior that was the winning song entry from the Sonicon SONICWIRE CONTEST 2024 (ソニコン SONICWIRE CONTEST 2024).[10]

On October 31, a teaser demo version of "Prism" featuring Miku V6 was published, together with a white sideways silhouette of Miku. An announcement was also published that prior owners of Hatsune Miku voicebanks would receive the "Early Access" demo version of Miku V6 by mid-December; this demo version would be restricted to singing in Japanese only, with no access to the VOCALOID6 Editor's Multilingual feature and thus unable to sing in English or Mandarin Chinese.[11][12]

On December 10, Koizumi, director of the Virtual Singer Project, announced that Miku V6's Early Access version was just released to registered owners of eligible past versions of Hatsune Miku.[13] Miku products eligible for the Early Access trial were those that included either the VOCALOID2 Editor or Piapro Studio, namely: VOCALOID2 Hatsune Miku, Hatsune Miku V3 series (including Hatsune Miku V3 English), Hatsune Miku V4X series (including Hatsune Miku V4 English and Hatsune Miku V4 Chinese), and the PIAPRO CHARACTERS SUPER PACK; users who only owned library-only products (namely, Hatsune Miku Append and Hatsune Miku V3 - Light and Vivid) were ineligible for Early Access. The Early Access version was a 39-day trial version that only supported Japanese; Multilingual support for English and Mandarin Chinese was disabled for this trial, and the voicebank could not be used with the VX-β plugin, nor with VOCALO CHANGER (neither the plugin nor the in-editor function).[14]

Package details as noted:

Hatsune Miku V6 is a feminine Japanese AI voicebank based on the voice-acted singing style and vocals of Saki Fujita.

According to Wataru Sasaki (wat), the Miku V6 project involved deep exploration into matching Hatsune Miku's vocal character with the VOCALOID6 AI engine. After extensive trial and error, her Early Access trial version was released on December 10, 2025 after tangible results had been achieved.[14]

Final adjustments based on feedback from creators using the Early Access and reactions from fans would be made, aiming for a release in the first half of 2026.[14]

Vocal traits as noted:
  • According to wat, Hatsune Miku V6 retains Miku's signature feel while adding naturalness and breathiness.[14]
Phonetic notes as noted:
  • The Early Access 39-day trial version was not compatible with the "Multilingual" function, thus Miku was only able to sing in Japanese.[14]
  • According to Koizumi, the full version at launch will only be able to sing in Japanese and English through "Multilingual"; a free update will be later provided to enable her to sing in Mandarin Chinese.[14]
