Released on December 27, 2007, Rin &amp; Len Kagamine (鏡音リン・レン, Kagamine Rin/Len) is the second installment of the Vocaloid Character Vocal Series, male voice (Len) and female voice (Rin). Their family name was chosen by combining Kagami (鏡, Mirror), Ne (音, Sound), with the first syllables of their given names, puns on "Left" and "Right". Despite popular depictions as fraternal twins, they are not actually brother and sister, but are reflections of a mirror. According to Crypton's official blog, the package includes two voice banks: one for Rin and another for Len, both provided by the seiyū Asami Shimoda. Despite the double voice banks, the package still sells at the same price as Miku Hatsune.
+
Kagamine Rin & Len (鏡音リン・レン), codenamed CV02, are Japanese VOCALOIDs developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and were initially released in December 2007 for the VOCALOID2 engine. They are the second set of vocals for Crypton's Character Vocal Series and are both Character Voice VOCALOIDs. There has since been numerous installments such as additional voice banks dubbed 'Append', an update to the VOCALOID4 engine, and an English vocal.

On June 12, 2008, Crypton announced the updated edition, named "act2", would be released in early July 2008. Users who had bought the old version got an expansion disc free of charge. On June 18, 2008, beta demonstration songs using the new version were released on the company's official blog.
+
Their voices are provided by the Japanese voice actress, stage actress, and singer Asami Shimoda (下田麻美 Shimoda Asami).

The act.2 version is an independent installation, and coexists with the initial software.
+
As of August 31, 2019, there will be no further installments with the VOCALOID program. Instead Crypton is focusing on their own program, piapro-studio.

Concept
  +
The development of the Kagamines began when Crypton formulated the concept of making a pair of female and male voicebanks. The first idea was for two voices of a girl and an identical male of the opposite gender, just like twins.

Crypton originally had the intention of distributing them as twins, but this was not adopted. Crypton stated that they approved of the many different interpretations of Rin and Len's relationship that they saw in different works. Crypton's final announcement was that the Kagamines were neither siblings nor lovers. During their Append's production, Wataru Sasaki (aka. Wat) described them as two bodies with one soul. Wat also said that the Append boxart makes the pair seem like twins, due to the foetal position they were in.

Etymology
  +
When the Kagamines were being recorded in 2007, their names were not yet decided. Their given names of Rin and Len were said to be based on "<u>ri</u>ght" and "<u>le</u>ft" according to Asami Shimoda. She later confirmed in an interview after the Append release that the names were based on Ken and Rin from Fist of the North Star, derived from a discussion about names that were familiar from her childhood.

Their surname was derived from the developing code combining Kagami (, mirror) and Ne (, sound). This refers to an "echo", which is a sound being bounced back to the user from a different direction caused by soundwaves hitting a surface at a direction that reflects it back the way it came.

KEI was given a concept by Crypton that included Rin and Len's approximate ages as well as the idea of them being 'mirror images' and, like Hatsune Miku, androids. KEI was not given any further direction as he had already drawn the art for Miku, the first release in the Character Vocal Series.

Rin was the first of the Kagamines to be illustrated and, following Crypton's concept, Len was made to match her. Their leg features were designed to mimic Loudspeaker. The keytar Len is often featured holding in merchandise is a YAMAHA KX5. Their main design, of which is most noticeable on their boots, uses the YAMAHA EOS as a design base.

Also, each Kagamine has a particular Clef symbol associated to their design. Rin has a G-clef (Treble-clef) on her shirt and Len has a F-clef (Bass-clef) on his. In their Append redesigns, they are found on chokers rather than their shirts.

:'Daughter of Evil' tells the story of an evil princess, represented by Rin, who rules over a 'black/yellow kingdom' with every luxury she could wish for at the expense of her people. The story chronicles how the Daughter of Evil falls in love with a man from a "blue kingdom" (Kaito), but he already has a lover from a "green land" (Miku Hatsune). In a jealous rage, the Daughter of Evil orders the "green land" destroyed. While the "green land" burns, the Daughter of Evil announces, "Oh my, it's time for a snack". Later, a woman with red armor (Meiko) storms the Daughter of Evil's kingdom, together with the man from the blue kingdom, who was sent into despair and rage after his lover's death. Together with the angry people from all over the land, they sieze the Daughter of Evil, who is then sentenced to death at the guillotine. Before she is beheaded, however, the Daughter of Evil once more says her usual line: "Oh my, it's time for a snack".

:It's not made clear in the song whether the Daughter of Evil is a vampire or some other sort of evil spirit or monster, or if she is simply a ruler so tyrannical that she is like a monster.

"Act2" designs
  +
*Rin has "Act2" under her "02" arm tattoo. While Len now has "Act 2" on his headphones.
  +
*The top was changed around the armpit area, frills were added to the bottom of her top in Act2.
  +
*The shoulder position was corrected from the original design.
  +
*All of the yellow bands on her outfit were made thicker.
  +
*The fringe was made thicker above the left eye. And Len's fringe was reshaped and other strands were adjusted.
  +
*Len's face, particularly around the cheekbones, were reshaped.
  +
*The leg position was corrected; the original's left knee was wider and the right leg was too short. KEI corrected the "Act2" version by changing the positions of the foot. While Len's left knee had a minor tweak.
  +
*Forearms were shortened.
  +
*The interface design on the detached sleeves were changed from green bar to blue.

:"Daughter of Evil" has spawned some other Vocaloid parody songs, including Kaito's "Yami no Ou" (Lord of Darkness), a funny and light-hearted story about a vampire who falls in love, "Negi No Musume" (Daughter Of Leek) which is another comedy song from Miku's side, and Meiko's "Akujiki Musume Conchita (Conchita, The Epicurean Daughter of Evil)" which is a dark story of Conchita (Meiko) being queen and eating everything and everybody in sight (including her servants Kagamine Len and Rin, and her cook Kaito, and finally herself); Miku Hatsune's "Midori no Musume" (Daughter of Green), telling the story of Daughter of Evil from Miku's side, Meiko's "Midori no Adauchi"/"Fukushuu No Musume" (Daughter of Vengeance), telling the story of Daughter of Evil from Meiko's side, "Ao No Ouji" or "Yoru No Hana" ("Prince Of Blue" or "Night Flower")which tells the story from KAITO's side and UTAU's "Uso No Utahime", chronicling the creation of the fanmade vocaloid (and eventual proto-UTAUloid), Kasane Teto.

For their appends, Wat wanted them to have a sense of transparency with their design. In clarification to what he meant by this, he stated the "transparency" was in reference to their hearts. Their Append design and the official illustration were made by オサム (osamu).

Continuing the tradition of the Item War Internet Meme, many items were proposed for the pair. In the end, Len's item was a banana because his hair was commented to resemble a bunch of them, while Rin's item was an orange since her bow gave the impression of orange leaves. Before her release, Rin had the road roller assigned to her by accident in a video that suddenly received many views on December 1, 2007. Len had yet to be revealed at the time of the road roller meme.

For the V4x design, Rin was given a more silver/whiter look to make her appearance more refreshing. The design was also based more on the EOS B700 rather than the Kx5 because of its more whiter appearance. In addition, more synthesizer based music symbols were used.

:'Servant of Evil' is a parallel story to the 'Daughter of Evil', and tells the events of the song through the eyes of the Daughter of Evil's servant. Although he is actually her mirror image (Len), a few audiences beleive that he was simply her childhood friend who later on became her servant. Although the Daughter of Evil is cruel and cold, her servant only sees her soft and innocent side, and serves her devotedly. However, when visiting a 'land of green', Len happens to fall in love with a woman he sees there (Miku Hatsune). When the Daughter of Evil, in her jealousy, orders Len to have her killed, though, Len obeys without hesitation. Later, the woman's lover (Kaito, a man from a 'blue kingdom') and an uprising army (led by Meiko, a red knight) attack the palace intent on taking the Daughter of Evil's life. Her servant comes up with a plan to save her: they will trade clothes and switch places. Since the two are similar in appearance, no one will be able to tell the difference. Sure enough, the army is fooled, and the servant disguised as the queen is beheaded before a crowd, including the grieving queen. However, the servant tells us through the song, he has no regrets and is glad that he could serve Rin until the end.

Marketing
<br />Music and lyrics by Akuno-P (mothy)
+
The Kagamines were marketed as "2 vocals for the price of 1" and were aimed to catch the interest of the growing VOCALOID fandom. Unlike Hatsune Miku, they were not an immediate hit, failing to meet marketing expectations despite receiving the same level of promotion Miku received at the time of their release. After the release of their "Act2" voicebanks, sales picked up steadily and the Kagamines eventually became one of the more heavily marketed VOCALOIDs though have never met the marketing strength Miku gained before them.

Crypton Future Media registered both "Kagamine Rin" and "Kagamine Len" as a trademark on January 29, 2015.

:The third song in the "Daughter of Evil" series, 'Regret Message', also known as 'Message of Regret', tells of the Daughter of Evil's feelings directly after 'Servant of Evil'. She realizes that it had been her own selfishness that had killed Len. She goes to the beach and sees messages in bottles. This sight brings back a past memory when she and Len had thrown bottles with messages inside into the ocean when they were very young, because of the legend that if you wrote your wish on a piece of paper, bottled it, and let it float out to sea, it would become true. Rin's message says "Be with Len forever" and Len's message says "For Rin to always be happy." Rin then makes another wish: "If we could be reborn, I want to be with you again", which was apparently also Len's wish before he died.
+
Voicebanks
  +
The following covers the VOCALOID software, for future releases see Piapro Studio releases.

:One PV shows Rin being reborn as a VOCALOID2 character and being introduced to Len. This is not to be confused with Kokoro or Kokoro/Kiseki, though some people wonder as it seems to have the same setting as Kokoro, and Rin is in the exact same position when she was created.
+
;Kagamine Rin - Power
  +
:Kagamine Rin was designed to be a deeper tone teenage vocal compared to Hatsune Miku. She was meant to have tension to her vocal and was a "power" type vocal. The Kagamine Rin vocal, now known as "Power", has undergone dramatic overhauls over time due to quality issues and consequential versions have sounded different to past versions. The voice is voice acted and is an amateur singer.

:This song is generally regarded as one of "Evil Series". But Akuno-P answers about it only this way ;

;Kagamine Rin - Warm
Sung by Len
+
:Designed to fit a more acoustic sounding song, this is a version of the voice with more warmth, focusing on the lower tones of the vocal range resulting in duller highs but more depth in lows.

:The last song in the "Daughter of Evil" series, Re_birthday tells what happened to Len after he was beheaded. He is alone in a dark room not being able to see, then he hears a voice and starts to remember the evil that he has done. Then his arms are in red handcuffs (representing the bloodshed/Meiko) and his ankles are in blue chains (representing the tears shed/Kaito). Suddenly Len hears a melody coming from someone's voice, he is forgiven by everyone affected by his actions in the past and is given a new birthday and is reborn into a vocaloid because of Rin's melody from 'Regret Message'.

  +
* Kagamine Rin & Len V4X (VOCALOID4, Piapro Studio2), December 24, 2015

:This song is generally regarded as one of "Evil Series" by audiences. However, actually it is not. It is one of another series of "Zenmai-Jikake no Komoriuta".
+
;Kagamine Rin - Sweet
:"Zenmai-jikake no Komoriuta","Hakoniwano Shoujo", and "Re_birthday" are called "Zenmai-jikake no Komoriuta Series"(nursing song of spring-work (clockwork)) by Akuno-P. On the original video of "Re_birthday", one shot of picture which reminds of "Regret Message" appears for an instant. In his blog, Akuno-P declares that 'Re_birthday' is the answering of 'Regret Message'. Thus there is no doubt that 'Re_birthday' and 'Regret Message' form a sub series.
+
:A more cute sounding version of the voice of Rin with a sweeter tone.

* Kagamine Rin & Len V4 English (VOCALOID4, Piapro Studio2), December 24, 2015

:A fun, upbeat rap song, this is a must for all the hardcore Kagamine fans. Although the main idea involved is the Kagamine "twins" attempt to prove that they surpass Miku, this thought is centered more considerably on Rin. Len instead talks about the 'false' rumors that he is shota and towards the end of the first verse starts to compliment on how his voice was his greatest attribute and talent. Rin, during the second verse, bluntly states that she is sweeter, kinder, and more beautiful than Hatsune Miku.
+
;Kagamine Len - Power
  +
:Similar to Kagamine Rin "Power", the vocal is a "power" type vocal and is meant to have tension in the vocal. The vocal is meant to sound boyish, like a young masculine vocal. The vocal has undergone dramatic overhauls over time due to quality issues and some consequential versions are quite different to others, even compared to the Kagamaine Rin "Power" vocal. The voice is of a voice acted result and represents an amateur singer.

The course of the song is packed with the confidence of the Kagamine "twins", many compliments of their skills and traits, and a considerable amount of thanks to the audiences.

;Kagamine Len - Cold

+
:The Kagamine Cold vocal is the opposite of the Kagamine Rin vocal and is designed to sound moodier, more focus is on the highs. The result is fuller high sounds but the lower sounds are less attractive.

:Another very short variation of this song is where it is mixed with 'Daughter of Evil'. In the PV, Rin rushes in through the middle of the executed, rolls over the guillotine and rescues Len from the fate of a rolling head. A humorous take on the story, yet nonetheless leave many fans wishing that this was the actual ending, instead of Len meeting his horrible demise, dressed as Rin.

:In Kokoro , Rin is a robot made by a lonely scientist (This could be probably Len). But she is missing something that can't be found in a program: a heart and a mind (kokoro means both heart and mind). Eventually her creator passes away, leaving her alone for several hundred years. Eventually she begins to wonder about the man who created her, and accesses his research. Discovering more and more about the scientist and how hard he worked to create a kokoro for her, the robot is moved and is awakened to a world of new feelings. Overcome with emotion, the robot sings her feelings of sadness and gratitude to the person who created her. However, the kokoro which she found herself was too great for her fake body, and after some time the robot passes away.

:KOKORO is a popular song on Nicovideo and Youtube, and many covers have been made for it. In one of the most popular and famous of these covers, a spoken dialogue between the scientist and the robot is added at the intro, and it ends with the spoken line: Arigatou, otou-san (Thank you, Father), adding new insight into the story.

Initially, it was reported that their package sold 20,000 units. This was half the amount that the Hatsune Miku product before them sold.

:KOKORO/KISEKI serves as a prologue to KOKORO, telling the story of the scientist who created the robot in KOKORO. The scientist, represented by Len, creates a robot but realizes that she is missing something important: her kokoro. He wishes to share happiness and sadness with her, and so he begins working tirelessly at creating a heart and mind for her. However, as he works the scientist becomes aware of how his life will eventually come to an end. As he begins to lose hope, a miracle (KISEKI) suddenly happens: he recieves a message from the robot from the future, after she has created her own kokoro. Seeing how happy and yet tragic she looks, and realizing that his research was not all for nothing, the scientist obtains peace and passes away in tranquility.

During the VOCALOID2 era, the Kagamine package competed with the Megurine Luka package for 2nd place in the top 10 products. Usually, the Kagamine package managed to get the 2nd place spot, pushing Luka to 3rd place.

:In addition to KOKORO and KOKORO/KISEKI there is a version where both songs are mixed together, both stories told at the same time. As the melodies of the two songs were written to complement each other, the final effect is a complete and harmonious experience.

Their Append outsold the Miku Append package during the period after their release. The Act2 package and Append secured 4th and 5th spot between them in Crypton's end of year top 10 VOCALOID sales despite only being available for a short period of time (mostly owed, but not entirely, to pre-orders).

*Some call Rin and Len by the incorrect names "Lin" and/or "Ren". Though the romanized version of the words could be either, the English version was confirmed as "Rin and Len". Since there is no dubbed version to contend with, the names remain the only official names in existence for the vocals. This is also backed up by the origins of their names as "R" (Rin)" and "L" (Len).
  +
**Note; "L" and "R" mean "Left and Right". They are the letters you find on a set of headphones (and sometimes other equipment such as speakers). Usually, there is not enough space to write "left" and "right" on headphones. "L" refers to left ear and "R" is right ear.

:The setting according to the video seems to be in the time of the infamous holocaust during the World War II. Len is one of the many prisoners who were sent to concentration camps. As he does his routine of cleaning the camp, he encounters a beautiful young maiden (Rin). Len is fascinated by her so he decides to write her a letter one day, hoping the she would answer. His prayers being granted, his letter was given a reply. On a daily basis, they would meet for a brief moment and fly a paper plane across the barbed-wire wall. He found joy in his life just by getting letters from her--though he never conveyed his feelings for her.

They went as far as to tear the letters which triggered Len's anger and punched the General. In retort, the men decided to put him in the gas chambers to die as a punishment. Had he not taken action, would he still be alive? The answer is a bit ambiguous.

:This song is the reply to Len's "Prisoner" but in Rin's point of view--the young girl whom Len had fallen for. In the video, Rin is the daughter of one of the Generals' in-charge with the concentration camp on which Len was in. Though aware of what is happening around her, she still sought for the accompany of Len, even with her frail body. She goes to meet with Len and fly him a paper plane--the letter--even though she suffers from a terrible illness which was never clarrified in the story. She eventually falls for him but as soon as she does, her father found out about her affair and forbade her to go out of the hospital and meet the boy. As time goes by, Rin gets weaker and weaker that moving her legs proved to be very difficult for her. She then decides to bid farewell to Len properly so he won't have to search for her or ponder of what happened to her. She makes an excuse that she'll be going somewhere far away, but as soon as she was about to leave, Len tells her that he will wait for her and that he'll treasure each and every letter she gave him. As the story goes on, it is shown that Rin's father was the one who put Len in even more agony by ripping the letters from Rin. He was also the one who gave the order to execute Len.

:Rin on the other hand, is already paralyzed from the illness that she couldn't even grasp one of Len's letters. However, seeing how devoted Rin has become to Len, the father picked up the letter and placed it in her hand as a final act of kindness to his dying daughter. Rin is shown smiling when she dies,

:In "heaven" Rin is found in front of the barbed-wire wall, the very same way she stood when she first met Len. It is then shown that on the other side, Len was there, only this time, the wall disappears. With that, they found true happiness by being with each other in their own world.

:This PV and Prisoner's display Rin and Len as a couple or two people of no blood-relation--which is why many Kagamine fans find it hard to watch with the thought of "Twincest" covering the story.

Kagamine Rin & Len VOCALOID2 act2 Append VOCALOID4 English | Piapro Studio | Songs Albums Notable Originals

Their voices are provided by the Japanese voice actress, stage actress, and singer Asami Shimoda (下田麻美 Shimoda Asami).

As of August 31, 2019, there will be no further installments with the VOCALOID program. Instead Crypton is focusing on their own program, Piapro Studio.[1][2]

ConceptEdit

The development of the Kagamines began when Crypton formulated the concept of making a pair of female and male voicebanks. The first idea was for two voices of a girl and an identical male of the opposite gender, just like twins.[3]

Crypton originally had the intention of distributing them as twins, but this was not adopted. Crypton stated that they approved of the many different interpretations of Rin and Len's relationship that they saw in different works. Crypton's final announcement was that the Kagamines were neither siblings nor lovers.[4][5] During their Append's production, Wataru Sasaki (aka. Wat) described them as two bodies with one soul.[6] Wat also said that the Append boxart makes the pair seem like twins,[7] due to the foetal position they were in.[8]

EtymologyEdit

When the Kagamines were being recorded in 2007, their names were not yet decided. Their given names of Rin and Len were said to be based on "right" and "left" according to Asami Shimoda. She later confirmed in an interview after the Append release that the names were based on Ken and Rin from Hokuto no Ken, derived from a discussion about names that were familiar from her childhood.

Their surname was derived from the developing code combining Kagami (鏡, mirror) and Ne (音, sound). This refers to an "echo", which is a sound being bounced back to the user from a different direction caused by soundwaves hitting a surface at a direction that reflects it back the way it came.[9]

Their codename of "CV02" means "Character Voice 02".

AppearanceEdit

KEI was given a concept by Crypton that included Rin and Len's approximate ages as well as the idea of them being 'mirror images' and, like Hatsune Miku, androids. KEI was not given any further direction as he had already drawn the art for Miku, the first release in the Character Vocal Series.

Rin was the first of the Kagamines to be illustrated and, following Crypton's concept, Len was made to match her. Their leg features were designed to mimic speakers.[10][11] The keytar Len is often featured holding in merchandise is a YAMAHA KX5. Their main design, of which is most noticeable on their boots, uses the YAMAHA EOS as a design base.

Also, each Kagamine has a particular musical clef symbol associated to their design. Rin has a G-clef (Treble-clef) on her shirt and Len has a F-clef (Bass-clef) on his. In their Append redesigns, they are found on chokers rather than their shirts.

When Rin and Len received a new set of vocals during their Act2 release, KEI took the opportunity to fix flaws in the original artwork.

  • Act1 Rin
  • Act2 Rin

"Act2" designsEdit

  • Rin has "Act2" under her "02" arm tattoo. While Len now has "Act 2" on his headphones.
  • The top was changed around the armpit area, frills were added to the bottom of her top in Act2.
  • The shoulder position was corrected from the original design.
  • All of the yellow bands on her outfit were made thicker.
  • The fringe was made thicker above the left eye. And Len's fringe was reshaped and other strands were adjusted.
  • Len's face, particularly around the cheekbones, were reshaped.
  • The leg position was corrected; the original's left knee was wider and the right leg was too short. KEI corrected the "Act2" version by changing the positions of the foot. While Len's left knee had a minor tweak.
  • Forearms were shortened.
  • The interface design on the detached sleeves were changed from green bar to blue.

Append designsEdit

For their appends, Wat wanted them to have a sense of transparency with their design.[12] In clarification to what he meant by this, he stated the "transparency" was in reference to their hearts.[13] Their Append design and the official illustration were made by オサム (osamu).

Len had yet to be revealed at the time of the road roller meme.[14]

For the V4x design, Rin was given a more silver/whiter look to make her appearance more refreshing.[15] The design was also based more on the EOS B700 rather than the Kx5 because of its more whiter appearance.[16] In addition, more synthesizer based music symbols were used.[17]

RelationsEdit

For more on VOCALOID relationships, see the FAQ.

HistoryEdit

MarketingEdit

The Kagamines were marketed as "2 vocals for the price of 1" and were aimed to catch the interest of the growing VOCALOID fandom. Unlike Hatsune Miku, they were not an immediate hit, failing to meet marketing expectations despite receiving the same level of promotion Miku received at the time of their release. After the release of their "Act2" voicebanks, sales picked up steadily and the Kagamines eventually became one of the more heavily marketed VOCALOIDs though have never met the marketing strength Miku gained before them.

Crypton Future Media registered both "Kagamine Rin" and "Kagamine Len" as a trademark on January 29, 2015.[18][19]

VoicebanksEdit

The following covers the VOCALOID software, for future releases see Piapro Studio releases.

Kagamine Rin - Power
Kagamine Rin was designed to be a deeper tone teenage vocal compared to Hatsune Miku. She was meant to have tension to her vocal and was a "power" type vocal. The Kagamine Rin vocal, now known as "Power", has undergone dramatic overhauls over time due to quality issues and consequential versions have sounded different to past versions. The voice is voice acted and is an amateur singer.
Kagamine Rin - Warm
Designed to fit a more acoustic sounding song, this is a version of the voice with more warmth, focusing on the lower tones of the vocal range resulting in duller highs but more depth in lows.
  • Kagamine Rin & Len Append (VOCALOID2), December 27, 2010
  • Kagamine Rin & Len V4X (VOCALOID4, Piapro Studio2), December 24, 2015
Kagamine Rin - Sweet
A more cute sounding version of the voice of Rin with a sweeter tone.
  • Kagamine Rin & Len Append (VOCALOID2), December 27, 2010
  • Kagamine Rin & Len V4X (VOCALOID4, Piapro Studio2), December 24, 2015

Similar to Kagamine Rin "Power", the vocal is a "power" type vocal and is meant to have tension in the vocal.

Sales

Initially, it was reported that their package sold 20,000 units. This was half the amount that the Hatsune Miku product before them sold.[20]

During the VOCALOID2 era, the Kagamine package competed with the Megurine Luka package for 2nd place in the top 10 products. Usually, the Kagamine package managed to get the 2nd place spot, pushing Luka to 3rd place.

Their Append outsold the Miku Append package during the period after their release. The Act2 package and Append secured 4th and 5th spot between them in Crypton's end of year top 10 VOCALOID sales despite only being available for a short period of time (mostly owed, but not entirely, to pre-orders).[21][22][23] However, in June 2011, their Append had fallen to 8th place, one place below KAITO's VOCALOID voicebank.

During 2013, when both KAITO V3 and Hatsune Miku V3 were released, the charts were disrupted. When the charts resumed some form of order, the Kagamines were left in the 5th or 6th spot, leaving them overall more popular than Luka by MEIKO V3's release in 2014. Their Append had not been sighted for months and was by now completely off the charts. After MEIKO's V3 release, they disappeared from the charts, leaving them as the only Character Vocal Series member with no products in the charts. By mid-2014, they, along with the VOCALOID2 Megurine Luka package, would only make temporary appearances in the charts, but no longer held any form of constant ranking.

In 2014, Crypton's download store, Sonicwire, reported that the Kagamine Append package was the 8th most sold VOCALOID package on the store, while their Act2 product claimed 5th place.[24] In 2015, the Kagamine V4x package claimed 5th position, while the English bundle version claimed 4th. The sales were based on acquired sales through pre-orders and sales for just 6 days.[25] In January 2016, the bundled version of the update held the 1st place spot on Crypton's ranking, followed by the Japanese package in second.

Reaction

The Kagamines were slow to gain popularity in the Japanese fandom after the backlash from their original voicebanks. In later years, although they gained the second-highest number of songs, they were not as popular as Hatsune Miku.

In the Japanese fandom, Rin is the more popular of the two, with more related works than Len.

By the time of their V4x release, the duo had over 100 hit songs between them.[26]

Overall, Kagamine Rin is the 2nd most popular Crypton VOCALOID, while Len is the 4th. The majority of Japanese producers purchasing their package use Rin, wither having up to half of Len's popularity on top of her own popularity levels. Len can often at times lose his 4th position place to KAITO, if Rin's contributing popularity is not factored in. Rin herself will also at times lose popularity to Megurine Luka, though due to Rin's popularity being boosted by Len, Luka does not always maintain it.

Impact

Because of KAITO's failure, male voicebanks had little demand at the time of the Kagamines' release. Len's voicebank was the only male VOCALOID2 vocal until Camui Gackpo's release.[27]

Their designs spawned many producer-based derivatives.

Misc

An independent search revealed that most VOCALOIDs had less than 1,000 videos uploaded onto Nico Nico between July 1 and December 15, 2015. The Kagamines, however, managed to gain enough views to not fall into this category. Rin received 2,811 uploads while Len received 2,021. Rin had the 3rd highest total views during this period of any VOCALOID with 5,327,456 views and 477,046 mylists, and Len managed 4,555,580 views and 413,901 mylists. When sorted by average, Len was third with 2254.12 views per video and 204.8 mylists (which was more than Miku’s), and Rin had 1895.22 views per video and 169.71 mylists. However, when the views were based on the more accurate mean total, Len and Rin achieved 355 views/16 mylists and 349 views/16 mylists respectively per video, ranking last among the top 6 VOCALOIDs. However, the Kagamine software was the only VOCALOID package to be in all top 6 lists besides GUMI.[28]

In February 2014, Vocaloid Otaku user "Dessert>desert" decided to run a test to see how many illegal VOCALOID downloads were made via torrent. The Kagamine package was ranked the 3rd most popular illegal of the singular package downloads with 4,777 downloads. They were beaten by MAYU at 11,404 and VY2v3 at 12,434 downloads.[29]

In 2015, a survey showed that Kagamine Rin was the 3rd most popular VOCALOID in 2014 on Nico Video while Kagamine Len was the 6th most popular.[30]

Trivia
  • It took 25 hours (4 hours a day) to record all the Kagamine Appends.[31]
  • Some call Rin and Len by the incorrect names "Lin" and/or "Ren". Though the romanized version of the words could be either, the English version was confirmed as "Rin and Len". Since there is no dubbed version to contend with, the names remain the only official names in existence for the vocals. This is also backed up by the origins of their names as "R" (Rin)" and "L" (Len).
    • Note; "L" and "R" mean "Left and Right". They are the letters you find on a set of headphones (and sometimes other equipment such as speakers). Usually, there is not enough space to write "left" and "right" on headphones. "L" refers to left ear and "R" is right ear.
  • A total of 10 voicebanks makes the Kagamine package the most expansive set of vocals within the VOCALOID2 era. They are currently 3rd in the total number of vocals released behind Miku (with 15 vocals) in second and GUMI (with 17) in first.
Achievements
  • First dual voicebanks released with two "VOCALOIDs" in one package
  • Only dual voicebanks released for VOCALOID2
  • First male (Len) released for VOCALOID2
  • First VOCALOIDs to be updated
  • First vocal (Len) released not to be the same gender as the provider
  • First male (Len) to be Appended
