History

Kagamine V3; 2013

In November 2013, the Kagamines' package was being worked on along with an English version.

At the end of 2013, Wat stated he was working on the personality of the Kagamine and Megurine Luka vocals. Wat also mentioned that he was meeting increased challenges in the new year. After 10 days, he was finally able to work on configuring the Kagamine vocals.

Kagamine update; 2014

In January 2014, Wat revealed that due to the change in wavelength for VOCALOID3, he was re-evaluating ACT1 and "POWER" Rin and Len. Wat said that the early Rin voice had a strong feeling to it. He also said that the situation with MEIKO V3 "Power" was similar with the Kagamine Act1 package. MEIKO's "Power" vocal was recorded in 2009 and did not produce good results on the VOCALOID2 engine, so the decision was made to delay it until the VOCALOID3 engine. However, it was brought out again in 2013. Based on this, Wat mentioned it may be possible to also bring Act1 back.

After finishing the recording for the new Rin vocals, Wat felt that the shift to V3 proved to be a good one, especially for the "Power" Append. Wat thought that the Kagamines needed adjusting to give them a bigger vocal range. After working on the voices for a week, Wat decided that it was time to return to working on Megurine Luka V3. According to him, Rin's power and stretch notes are her strength. They were doing some research to continue to improve them.

Later, Len's high notes were discussed. They were in the process of improving along with the low frequency of the Kagamine voices. Aside from triphones, new recording material was added to their voices.

In late October, PowerFX's Bil Bryant revealed that their new vocal RUBY was due to be released before Christmas 2014. However since VOCALOID4 was soon to be announced, they were holding her back. In light of this, Wat was asked about Luka's status. The title of the product was mentioned and Wat referred to Luka as "New Luka" instead of "Luka V3". While it was not a confirmation that she is due for a V4 release, he did confirm otherwise. The Kagamines were not reported on, but they were stated to be due in the third quarter of 2015 while Luka was due in the first quarter.

On November 21, Wat shared that the Kagamines were going to be a V4X title like Luka. At this time, they were testing and implementing E.V.E.C on the duo VOCALOIDs.

In late December, Wat tweeted that the new V4 update was about 35% complete. Wat also mentioned that they were aiming for variations of strength in their vocals and control of the vocals' force.

Kagamine update; 2015

In February 2015, Wat reported that they will focus on the Kagamine V4X product upon the release of Megurine Luka V4X.

In March, the subject of their "Power" voice library was brought up.

It was confirmed that fixes to the Kagamine voices would happen by mid-May: the focus being on sound quality and pronunciations. If all went well, samples would be posted of the progress.

On May 21, Wat tweeted that the V4X update was about 65-70% complete.

On July 18, Rin's POWER voicebank was nearly complete and her WARM voicebank would be worked upon next. On August 1, it was noted that the Kagamines may be delayed to a late 2015 release. In August, a product page for Kagamine V4X was launched, placing their expected release in December 2015.

On October 23, Wat tweeted that a demo song was in the works for the pair. On October 29, following the release of the demo "Tokyo Zombie Land", the main page was updated. According to it, Rin received updates to her POWER, WARM, and SWEET voicebanks, while Len received updates to his POWER, COLD, and SERIOUS voicebanks. E.V.E.C. was only available to both VOCALOIDs' POWER voicebanks. The Voice Colors only included POWER and SOFT. In addition, it was confirmed that the Japanese package could be bought on its own or as a bundle with the English package.

During November, design teases were made. On the 15th, it was announced that their full design would be unveiled the following weekend.

Rin and Len V4X was confirmed to release on December 24, 2015.

As stated on their website, the V4X version is based upon the original act1 voice and the Append package. Like all past Kagamine packages, the contents of the package are split between Rin and Len, with both voices covering a certain range that overlaps each other, while offering contrasting approaches to the same vocal. It also makes use of the new E.V.E.C system within Piapro Studio. In contrast to Luka, the focus of this package is based upon "Tension" and the package keeps in line with the Kagamines' focus of being a "power" type vocal. In addition, because of its smaller overall content, it is not as advanced as the Luka V4X package, but in contrast it is overall more suitable for beginners for this reason. Also unlike the Luka V4x package, it covers a much greater tempo and vocal range with either Rin or Len between their 6 voicebanks, whereas Luka's V4X package only covered the same tempo and range for either Japanese or English. The package can be bought by itself or with the English version bundled. This package comes with Piapro Studio plug-in version. It was announced in August 2017 with the release of Hatsune Miku V4 Chinese that this vocal would have its own version of the Standalone Piapro Studio software. However, as of 1st Jan 2019 this version of Piapro Studio has failed to be released. The software comes with the Piapro Studio Edition of PreSonus's DAW "Studio One ARTIST", which includes various vocal effects and other tools. This includes also a resource pack with 200 virtual instruments. The complete package of Piapro Studio and Studio One ARTIST means that anyone buying this release can get started in music straight away with no need to purpose any further software, and all will work together with each other without any problems. This bundle is included in both the normal and English bundled versions of the software.
Vocal traits as noted:
GWL capable Discounting Luka English, compared to the Luka product, a total of 6 Japanese vocals are on offer 3 each. So those seeking to focus only on Vocaloid have more options based on Vocaloid alone, even if XSY is not used, have more options. One of the notable fixes of the package compared to the Vocaloid2 Append version is the balancing of Rin's vocal range. Whereas before her Appends suffered an overall limit vocal range in contrast to Len's, the pair are now more equals in their voicebanks ranges. While the Kagamine package was notorious for its bad reputation, the V4x version is a much higher quality product. The package being not difficult to use most of the time. The strength of the package is in its content, as like the original it still gives a "2 characters for 1" vibe.
Phonetic notes as noted:
The product has issues with "あ" (a) when used in conjunction with "-", the issue is not found among other VOCALOID and can be problematic.
Software issues as noted:
As pointed by producer Cillia, while they are now easier to mix, they both aren't that much different from their V2 version. This could make people unable to notice the update improvements. Though during the VOCALOID2 engine's era, a total of 5 vocals were produced for the pair, this package repeats only 3 of those 5 vocals. The missing two vocals should be covered by the E.V.E.C. "Soft" and "Power", however, like Luka it is impossible to create a natural recreation of the vocals missing with the Vocaloid voicebanks alone. The total variation offered by E.V.E.C. and XSY combined is notably less compared to other V4x packages. Compared to Miku, they have over 1/6 the output each, compared to Luka almost 1/7 the output each (note; based on Japanese vocals alone). Combined they still have only roughly 1/3 the output of either package. Because it is just an update of the previous versions and because of overall lack of combined content for what it offers, this is not the strongest of Crytpon's V4x packages. It may even be considered the overall weakest of the V4x packages overall. They did not heavily get impacted by the update as Megurine Luka V4X was when VOCALOID5 was released as they can be used within VOCALOID5 without issues as they did not rely as heavily on E.V.E.C. or additional Piapro Studio functions like Megurine Luka V4x did. Users should still be aware of the current situation with Piapro Studio in regards to VOCALOID5.
Cross-Synthesis as noted:
Kagamine V4x XSY group - Kagamine Rin XSY group - Kagamine Len XSY capable. XSY between the two Vocaloid (example "Rin Power" and "Len Cold") is impossible, XSY works only with vocals assigned to either Len or Rin. Discounting E.V.E.C., both Rin and Len each have access to the equivalent of 6 additional voicebanks achievable via XSY. The total tone variation offered by the package comes to a theoretical 9 voicebanks each in total. E.V.E.C colours offer a further of 2 variations per vocal to each Kagamine. Once used with XSY 8 additional tones are achievable. So E.V.E.C. offers a further 10 tone variations per Kagamine. XSY is only possible with the full VOCALOID4 software. They have superior XSY options to Megurine Luka V4x without E.V.E.C. each. From Ver.4.3.0 of the Vocaloid engine onwards, a XSY group "Kagamine Rin V4x" was added to Vocaloid. All vocals within the "Kagamine Rin V4x" group can XSY with each other. This vocal release is part of this group. If a User owns one or more vocal releases within the "Kagamine Rin V4x" group, XSY between them will open up. Currently only one release is found within this group Kagamine Rin & Len V4X making it a fairly limited XSY group. However, unlike other XSY groups with only 1 release current, this package includes voicebanks for the XSY group "Kagamine Len V4x" and is the only example of the inclusion of an addition XSY group within one single release. The group has 3 unique voicebanks; "Power_EVEC", "Sweet" and "Warm". From Ver.4.3.0 of the Vocaloid engine onwards, a XSY group "Kagamine Len V4x" was added to Vocaloid. All vocals within the "Kagamine Len V4x" group can XSY with each other. This vocal release is part of this group. E.V.E.C. as noted:
In regards to their E.V.E.C. The Kagamine V4X package, in contrast to the Megurine Luka V4X package has only two E.V.E.C. colours; "Power" and "Soft". This is because the situation was reversed, instead of having expressions and "colouring" them with tones, they have tones which were then coloured with expression. Only the two "Power" Append vocals have access to E.V.E.C. in addition to this. The "Consonant Extension Function" is replaced by "Pronunciation Extension Function (Stronger Pronunciation)". This function enables to switch to a stronger pronunciation when moving from consonant to vowel. You can give a stronger tension to the attack of words for every note. Also, this "Stronger Pronunciation" is intended to work along with GWL when creating a "screaming" voice, by turning on "Stronger Pronunciation" and adding a sufficient amount of Growl. This function is considered the best among the V4x range. Though their colours are limited in number compared to Luka's, they have more noticeable impact when used for XSY then man of the combinations Luka had to offer. For having 1 vocal with access to E.V.E.C. each, the have the most limited E.V.E.C. options out of the V4x range.

Vocal traits as noted:
Triphones added. Increased Tempo range which allows Power to cover more slower genres of music. Her highest vocal range is not quite as high as the original V2 vocal, however her lower range is greatly increased. Overall, her "Power" vocal has a much greater range than it did in V2. This fixes the main issue with the original Append concerning its limited range.
Software issues as noted:
As with many other Power voicebanks, the general performance of both Power vocals produce a notorious sharp and metallic tone. To add to the above,the vocal can come off as too strong when using a combination of the E.V.E.C. functions. This leads to loss of quality.

While many XSY-capable releases had vocals which had particular roles in different ranges, the intension of "Warm" and "Sweet" is more of an expressive role to Rin. Users are meant to go to and from "Power" as a result and add influences of "Warm" and "Sweet" into the vocal. This is why "Power" has access to EVEC while the other two voicebanks do not, as the theme of the Kagamine release is "tension" so "Power" is the most controllable voicebank within the package for this reason. A joint control of XSY and EVEC maybe needed to get the full potential of the package, applying "EVEC" where needed on any weaker results. Rin often is more expressive then Len but less emotional sounding.

In regards to E.V.E.C "Power" serves to create tone variation and expression for Rin by combining it via XSY with "Sweet" and "Warm". The expression can be controlled with both Voice colours "Soft" and "Power". When used for XSY, this will adjust the expression further, allowing for combinations such as softer Power/Sweet XSY. To further add to expression, the new "Pronunciation extension" function will strength the vocals further. This is recommended to be combined with GWL to achieve its best results. Its use is effective enough that"Power" coloured with the "Power" Voice colour, and this function produce an extremely overpowering result, or swap out for the "soft" colour for the same, but softer result. The effect liken to Rin shouting during singing. When used with XSY in combination with the Pronunciation extension E.V.E.C, a high variety of tone variation and expression can be achieved. Her upper range is slightly lower, but her lower ranges are greatly increased. Overall, her vocals range has greatly been increased.
