Otobe Sapphire (乙辺サファイア) is a Japanese vocalist developed and distributed by GEMVOX, a sub-division of Studio ENTRE Inc., and was released for the VOCALOID6 engine in November 2025.
Her voice provider is Japanese singer Yun*chi, who also provided the voice for Sapphire's younger sister Otobe Hisui for the VoiSona engine.
Concept[]
Sapphire is a girl born and raised by the sea. While singing along to the rhythm of the ocean's roaring waves, she discovered she possessed the power to connect sound and heart. Her crystal-clear voice is said to evaporate tears and awaken dormant feelings. She herself pays no mind to such things, simply smiling and saying, "The sky is so blue and beautiful today, isn't it?" She is the older sister of Otobe Hisui.
Cherishing the memory of her sister who once sang with her, Sapphire continues to sing, hoping her voice reaches beyond the distant sky. She is a presence that holds a deep blue within her brightness.
Her favorite things are "the sea at sunrise" and "the foam at the water's edge." Her dream is to dye the world a gentle blue with her song.[2]
In the web novel SAMURAI Cryptos: Resonance of Silence, Sapphire is conceived as a student at Kamui Academy (神威学園; Kamui Gakuen), one of various schools for training people into "Composers" (神子). Composers are individuals who, to protect humanity, master the power of song and music to fight terrible extradimensional monsters called "Dissonance Beasts" (不協和音ノ獣; Disonansu no Kedamono), who seek to ruin the human world by expanding dimensional rifts dubbed the "Prelude of Evil" (魔ノ前奏曲; Akuma no Preryūdo) which upon contact can vanish people into another dimension. Sapphire is described as an underachieving failure as a Composer, in spite of being the daughter of an exceptionally skilled Composer.[3][4][5]
Etymology[]
The kanji "Oto" (乙) can mean "the latter", "duplicate", "strange", or "witty";[6] it is also an archaic term used as a prefix for "young(er/est)".[7] The kanji "Be" (辺) can mean "environs", "boundary", "border", or "vicinity";[8] in archaic or poetical contexts it can also mean "surrounding area", "seashore", "seaside", or "coast" (the latter three meanings being references to her concept design explained earlier above) and is sometimes used as a suffix to roughly indicate location.[9] Put together, "Otobe" (乙辺), which is a known family name or surname,[10] can possibly mean "young environment", but in this special context (given her concept) it could also alternatively mean "young seashore".
As with all GEMVOX vocals, her given name is based upon that of a gemstone, hers being "Sapphire" (a blue gemstone, blue being her symbol color), written in katakana as "サファイア". Her name is written in Japanese styling, similar to vocalists like Hatsune Miku (初音ミク).

A web novel titled SAMURAI Cryptos: Resonance of Silence (サムライクリプトス~静寂のレゾナンス~) was first published on October 31, 2025 on the TellerNovel (テラーノベル) digital platform as a collaboration with GONZO K.K., the animation studio that collaborated with Studio ENTRE Inc. in the creation of the GEMVOX project. The novel was written by Kujūku Kaname (要九十九) and illustrated by Yoshihiko Fujimori. Otobe Sapphire was featured in the promotional poster and banner for the novel; in the novel, Sapphire is portrayed as an underachieving Composer who joins forces with the main protagonist, an equally-underperforming high-school student named Ichinose Eito (一野瀬詠心), to combat the Dissonance Beasts in spite of their terrible academic shortcomings.[3][4][5]
