2024[]
On August 5, 2024, a collaboration project between Studio ENTRE Inc. (a company with the goal of creating new businesses by combining the broad entertainment business with technology) and Japanese animation studio GONZO K.K. announced the formation of a new A.I. singer label, "GEMVOX". GEMVOX was announced to be a next-generation label that includes A.I. singers, all named after gemstones, developed using the latest voice synthesizer technology aimed with the goal of having new works created daily by various creators and to provide a series of captivating "AI Singers"[note 1] that inspire creators' imagination, curate the works produced, and encourage collaboration among creators. The project was launched together with Shinichiro Ishikawa, president of GONZO, who continues to pioneer the use of technology in the anime industry, while also taking advantage of the activities of the AI research group "ARS" (AI Resonate Society).[1][2][3] This group had months earlier developed, in partnership with Yamaha Corporation, the private VOCALOID β-STUDIO voicebank L for use in an event titled "VX-β作家ソン".[4] On August 21, the president of Studio ENTRE Inc., Norikazu Yamaguchi, followed up on a blog that the technology would be collaborating with Dreamtonics Co., Ltd., Techno-Speech, Inc., and Yamaha, intent to create AI singers for various platforms and are preparing various projects.[5]

After revealing that same day that its first AI vocalist, Topaz (voiced by Elley,[1][2][3][6] L's voice provider),[7][8] would be developed as a bilingual Japanese and English voice database for Synthesizer V Studio[5] (with release date later set for October 16),[9] three other AI vocalists, all of them then-unnamed, were being hinted on the GEMVOX homepage, with no mention of any specific synthesizer engines for them. An image of a masked man was being shown for the second vocalist (temporarily given the placeholder name "???"); about two months later his name would be changed to Jasper,[10] and later on he would be announced to be a Song Voice for VoiSona,[11] voiced by Taichiro Mitsunaga[12] and with release date eventually set for December 11.[13] For the last two vocals from the GEMVOX homepage, only two black silhouettes were shown, packed together as a pair over the placeholder name "???". Both appeared to be human figures with short feminine hair, with the left silhouette sporting a pigtail hanging from her right side and tied at its base, and the right one wearing what appeared to be a small crown or hat tilting to her left side and what resembled a tall collar around her neck typical of what can be found on coats or jackets.[14]
2025[]
On July 28, 2025, in response to a question from a Twitter user, GEMVOX answered that the company had plans to exhibit their newest products at various events including the Tokyo Musical Instruments Expo 2025 (東京楽器博2025; Tōkyō Gakki Haku 2025), which would be held in November.[15] After releasing Topaz V2 (now a trilingual Japanese, English, and Korean vocal) for Synthesizer V Studio 2 on September 17,[16] the company announced on the morning of October 1 that at midnight, they would air a television commercial for Topaz, with a special announcement to be thrown in as a bonus revealing information about GEMVOX's new upcoming character.[17]
On October 2 after 00:00 JST (sometimes written on Japanese TV as October 1 at 24:00), as a "special report" released "ahead of schedule", the third GEMVOX vocalist (after Topaz and Jasper) was revealed to be named Otobe Sapphire, and it was said that she would be released on November 6 for the VOCALOID6 engine.[18][19] The next morning, GEMVOX announced that pre-orders for Sapphire would open on November 1, to coincide with their exhibition at the Tokyo Instruments Expo.[20]
On October 31 at around 11:00 JST, a second TV commercial was aired by GEMVOX; on it, Sapphire's official artwork was shown for the first time, accompanied by a short snippet of her singing voice.[21] Immediately after, music magazine DTM STATION published an article (tweeted by GEMVOX)[22] where not only Sapphire's full illustration and character concept were revealed, but also information on Sapphire's younger sister Otobe Hisui (including her full artwork) was revealed for the first time. The article also revealed that both sisters were voiced by one same voice provider, Japanese singer Yun*chi. Also, it revealed that Sapphire's release date was moved up by two days, from November 6th to the 4th (her pre-order opening date still remained as November 1st), while Hisui's release date for VoiSona was stated to be December 15.[23][24] This information was relayed three minutes later to GEMVOX's own news blog;[25] Yun*chi also mirrored this info on her own official blog.[26]
Otobe Sapphire was released on November 4 at around 00:00 JST on the GEMVOX SHOP, both as a standalone voicebank (bundled with the VOCALOID6 Lite Editor) and as a Starter Pack bundled with the full VOCALOID6 Editor and Cubase LE. Then at around 12:00 JST, she was released on Yamaha's own VOCALOID SHOP.[27][28]
