Talk Ex (known colloquially as Otomachi Una Talk (音街ウナTalk Ex)) was a text-to-speech software featuring the VOCALOID4 mascot Otomachi Una; the voice is provided by Aimi Tanaka.

Entering words and sentences into the program will result in Una reading the input out loud. The site recommends for usage such as: video narration, answering machine pick-up, and audio-book production such as reading aloud.

About[]

Talk Ex uses the AITalk[1] synthesis engine by AI, Inc. (エーアイ), specifically version AITalk3. This engine is different from that used for Megpoid Talk and is said to be smoother and more realistic.

A sample window is provided on the product page.

Features[]

The software is capable of...

  • Text Input and Speech Synthesis: Enter the words or phrases into the text window. It is possible to enter multiple words or phrases. Click the Synthesis button to compile.
  • Adjustable volume, speed, height and intonation of synthesized speech. These adjustments can create an expressive voice with sharpness and emotion.
  • Adjustment of intonations allow for a more natural sounding speech pattern.
  • Adjustable pause length such as punctuation marks, line feeds, reservoirs.
  • A dictionary registration that users can customize. This allows a common word to adhere to the phrasing the user set.
  • Files can be saved in WAVE format and TEXT format, and can be imported to other programs of similar purpose.

History[]

A few months after the VOCALOID release of Otomachi Una, on March 8, 2017, a teaser video was uploaded featuring the designs of Sugar and Spicy, along with a hidden third Una design that was yet unrevealed.[2] One week later, the full design was shown, belonging to Otomachi Una Talk.[3] Una Talk (or Talk Ex) ran on the same engine as VOICEROID+ EX, AITalk, but was not part of the VOICEROID lineup as the brand is owned by AH-Software Co. Ltd.

Since her initial release as a singing and speaking mascot, Una has participated in various collaborations with companies.

2020[]

On November 11, 2020, Una's VOICEROID2 version, running on AITalk4, was revealed, and she released on December 11.[4] At the same time, her Talk Ex version, which ran on the older AITalk3, was discontinued for sale.[5]

2024[]

On December 20, 2024, AI, Inc. announced that new activations of Otomachi Una Talk Ex would no longer be possible after March 31, 2026 when her activation servers were expected to cease operations. To remedy this, she was announced to receive a new version for A.I.VOICE2 (based on the newer AITalk6 engine), but no release date was announced; a new pair of silhouette images of Una were shown along with the announcement.[6][7]
