Vocaloid 3 is the current anticipated successor to the Vocaloid 2 engine. The new Vocaloid engine was revealed on June 8th 2011 by YAMAHA via NicoNico Douga live stream. It can be purchased at the official Vocaloid Site.

Confirmed details

Vocaloid 3

Vocaloid 3 interface

From Vocaloidism (read article at Vocaloidism for more details);

  • It will have better quality audio: longer samples will be used , sibilants such as /s/ will be less “metallic-sounding”, better /w/ sounds, smoother pronunciation including for fast-talking. The transition between different voice registers (low/high) will be smoother.
  • It will be easier to use: there is an improved interface, with a new display of the different tracks similar to what can be seen on DAW‘s, audio files (for off-vocal tracks for instance) can now be imported, and it will now work as a VST host (it will be possible to add reverb and other effects).
  • It will be possible to undo or redo any previous action in the Editor.
  • It will be compatible with VOCALOID2 voicebanks, this was confirmed by several sources. Anders reported he was unsure if there was a fee for updating, but mentioned if there is indeed one then the fee will be small.[1] Internet co. Ltd has chosen to release updated versions of their Vocaloid 2 packages while Crypton has confirmed they will give allowance for free.
  • It will support these new languages: Korean, Chinese and Spanish (pinyin input for Chinese and hangul input for Korean possible). The Editor will also be localized. Giuseppe, who has much experience at using Vocaloids, is reported to be playing a major role in the Spanish Vocaloid development.
  • It will work on Windows XP/Vista/7.

Starter Software

The following voicebanks are confirmed as being able to be bought with the vocaloid 3 software.

VY2 is expected in the near future.

Vocaloid 2 vs Vocaloid 3 comparison

Vocaloid 3 is the first Vocaloid engine to feature backwards compatability with past Vocaloids. As such, importing Vocaloids from Vocaloid 2 into Vocaloid 3 is possible. Results from Vocaloid 2 will not be the same for Vocaloid 3.

Vocaloid software however, is now confirmed unsupported as of 2011 by Yamaha and voicebanks Leon, Lola, Miriam, Meiko and Kaito cannot be imported into Vocaloid 3. These voicebanks will slowly be fazed out in the expected future.

Release

Currently, PowerFX has confirmed that they have a voicebank ready for release. The date set was October 21st 2011; however, this was only an estimate; the exact date will be determined by the release of the Vocaloid 3 engine. Anders confirmed on the 11/09/2011 that this was not true, while PowerFX confirmed over e-mail to a fan in the previous week the voicebank was still being worked upon, but would be ready in time for release of the vocaloid 3 software.

Vocaloid 3 was released on October 21, 2011.
