A speech synthesizer program developed by AH-Software, released on December 4, 2009. It's name is derived from "VOCALOID"; however VOCALOID is meant for singing, while VOICEROID is meant for speaking.
For more information on VOICEROID visit the Voiceroid Wiki.
The user is able to adjust the speed, pitch, and intonation to make the speech generated by the program sound more natural. VOICEROID enables the user to type in any word or phrase and the selected character will repeat it back to them. All original VOICEROID and VOICEROID+ products were packaged with the animating software, Crazy Talk SE.
There have been two versions of the software so far, VOICEROID and VOICEROID2.
It uses AITalk though is not compatible with any other Talk software used by other VOCALOIDs.
The VOICEROID software was built for speaking and for this specific task it sounds quite natural. The VOICEROID software has several uses including music, education, and for those with disabilities which may impede speech. Later versions are capable of several emotions, and the software is overall considered very simple to use. It excels at speech when compared to VOCALOID.
It was built for Japanese only, and while it does register English text, it does not use the correct pronunciation. For example, the word "hi" is spelled out rather than said normally. As a text-to-speech based software, however, it is subject in general to talking words as they are literally written. This is less apparent with the Japanese language but still found within the VOICEROID software.
Although able to handle speech better then VOCALOID, so far only a small number of VOICEROID vocals have been released with an additional VOCALOID vocal. Furthermore, because it uses a different engine from VOCALOID-flex, it does not use the same licensing as VOCALOID, and is restricted to just AH-Software as a voicebank development source.
- All VOICEROID and VOCALOID packages from AH-Software were originally banned from Karen-T and Piapro as AH-Software had never granted permission for their use with these services. However, while permission was later granted to all VOCALOIDs, the ban on VOICEROIDs has never been lifted from either service.
- Yuzuki Yukari, Tohoku Zunko, Kizuna Akari, and Haruno Sora are the only characters who currently have both a VOICEROID and VOCALOID voicebank.
