XSyn is a VST3 plug-in developed by Internet Co., Ltd. that is advertised as being able to blend different singing voices and to "bring the voice quality of input vocals closer to that of the input vocals in the side chain[1]." Through the use of a side chain effect, XSyn is able to produce an audio effect similar to that of VOCALOID4's Cross-Synthesis feature. Users can achieve this effect by inputting vocals that sing the same lyrics and melody at the same timing to the side chain. All purchased copies of VOCALOID6 products from Internet Co., Ltd. include the XSyn VST3 plugin.
XSyn was introduced and released as an included bonus feature among other Internet Co., Ltd. VST3 effects originally as part of the AI Megpoid voicebank, due in-part to VOCALOID6's lack of Cross-Synthesis. XSyn was advertised as able to produce a similar effect to the Cross-Synthesis feature, though requires the use of outside software, such as ABILITY 4.0 Pro or other various compatible digital audio workstation (DAW) applications.[2][3][4][5] Informational tutorials of how to use the feature were also released on Internet Co., Ltd.'s official YouTube Channel featuring a demonstration combining the vocals of AI Megpoid, HARUKA and AI Otomachi Una.[6][7]
A DTM STATION press release was released on November 27, 2022 detailing further information of XSyn's features. In an interview with Internet Co., Ltd. CEO Noboru Murakami, Murakami explains that XSyn was developed after seeing VOCALOID users on social media plead for the return of Yamaha Corporation's Cross-Synthesis feature in the new software. He stated that an official pronunciation for the software's name isn't known but suggested users could call it Cross-Syn (クロスシン) or "X"-Syn (エックスシン). Murakami also noted that it while how it produces Cross-Synthesis-like results is a bit technical, he states that the spectral envelope of the target voice is applied to the original voice. Mechanistically, it uses almost the same method as the cross-synthesis used in VOCALOID4, noting that it should be very similar. When asked if the software could be applied to audio not rendered by VOCALOID6, Murakami noted that due to the application of a spectral envelope, timing is very strict, and if it is off, it would not work well, but did note that while possible, it does not have to be VOCALOID6. Murakami has not yet verified whether other text-to-speech software will work with it, but as long as the timing can be matched, it could still be usable. Murakami noted at the time that Internet Co., Ltd. would only be planning to distribute it to AI Megpoid users, and had no plans to sell it separately in the future. It was Murakami's hope that users would use it together with AI Megpoid. XSyn has been made available as a bonus feature included with all other Internet Co., Ltd. VOCALOID6 products since the release of AI Megpoid.[8]
