On May 29, 2015, in a Q/A session with Shanghai HENIAN Information Technology Co. Ltd., fans asked questions about a possibility to update their VOCALOID3s. The company responded that it was always in consideration, but noted that upgrading a VOCALOID was not easy as it would require time, funding, and effort to revisit a VOCALOID. At the time, the company’s operations and survival could not allow them to update any vocals.[2]

On July 23, in response to a producer’s question, Yuezheng Longya’s production was leaked. It was also noted that SHN was considering VOCALOID4 updates for Luo Tianyi, YANHE, and Yuezheng Ling.[3]

On July 25, 2018, Rosary reported that recordings for a Ling V5 update were in progress.[4]

On February 22, 2020, Rosary noted that due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, many projects were delayed. Some time ago, he kept returning to the company, preparing to take home the recorded libraries for further work. After bringing them home, he was able to complete several V5s. At the time of his post, he hoped to create demos in time for Ling's character birthday in April. He confirmed that she had a Dark voicebank in the works and was asking for suggestions for the Chinese name of the voicebank.[5]

On April 12, Ling's second official compilation, LOVE LETTER released.[6] Later, one of the songs in the EP, "Flower", was released as a PV. While not stated explicitly which voicebanks this song used, QI Inory noted in her self-cover's description that she "wished Ling V5 could be released early".[7] In May, another song was uploaded and confirmed to use Ling's V5 update, but it was not heavily promoted as an official demo.

On April 12, 2021, a new demo was released for Ling's character anniversary. It was confirmed it used her V5 voicebank, which was noted to be nearing the end of its production. Trials with detailed rules would be announced at a later date.[8]

Ling's V5 illustration was revealed on June 18 and was illustrated by TID.[9] On the same day, it was announced that her V5 library had entered the testing phase and Shanghai HENIAN was interested in inviting producers to try her out and register from June 18 to June 30.[10] The details were as follows:

  1. The trial version of VOCALOID5 Yuezheng Ling was temporarily available for producers, tuners, and original musicians who were interested in the voice synthesis sound library engine. Other users needed to pay attention to the official follow-up event release.
  2. Users were to send a personal introduction and portfolio link to the designated company email. Instructions to apply for Ling's V5 trial would be sent as an email from the official mailbox.
  3. The VOCALOID5 editor was required to use the library.
  4. Due to the limited number of trial libraries, it was possible that that all trial applications may not be accepted.
  5. The final decisions of this activity were to be made only by Shanghai HENIAN

After receiving strong negative feedback from fans regarding Ling's V5 design, Shanghai HENIAN confirmed that an adjustment may be considered.[11] TID later revealed the past drafts of Ling's potential V5 design in chronological order.[12] He pointed out certain designs in particular:

  • Images 1 and 2 were designs based on the V3 outfit. Later potential drafts had complicated parts removed.
  • When the design progressed into the directions of images 5 and 6, image 5 had a more finished and detailed look version to accompany the basic concept draft. This was later changed into another fashion direction, leading it to appear more like an "every day" modern design. TID had preferences toward images 5 and 6, but he did not enter many suggestions in the finalized choices.[13]

TID later followed up with his own comments regarding the insults toward his taste in fashion and design skills. He confirmed that the design hardly had his own input, noting that the insults against his "lack of design skills" were unwarranted.[14] He added that there was no need for people to continuously scold the official accounts. Based on the image uploads, he wanted to make clear that there was hard work put into the creation of Ling's V5 outfit. He pointed out that there were instructions regarding the desire to break away from the original design, but also consider the preferences of long-time fans and yet not be too detached. He wrote that fans have different ideas and tastes, making it a challenge to be able to create a design that would please everyone. However, now that Shanghai HENIAN had a collection of suggestions, they would be able to work hard to improve and achieve as much satisfaction as possible.[15] On July 14, Shanghai HENIAN once again acknowledged this problem after the reveals of YANHE V5 and Luo Tianyi V5. They noted that after seeing a lot of controversial discussions, they apologized for making the fans worried and thanked them for their sincere concern. They reconfirmed that they would be taking time to polish and adjust the V5 designs.[16]

On July 15, videos featuring Ling V5's trial voicebank were uploaded to bilibili, implying that Shanghai HENIAN had began distributing her to users with approved applications. While there were no Chinese names associated with the voicebanks, according to producer usages, the two that she had available were known in English as "Normal" and "Dark".

On May 11, 2022, an updated version of the design by TID was revealed along with a reference sheet.[17] On October 14, it was announced that pre-orders for Yuezheng Ling V5, Luo Tianyi V5, and YANHE V5 were opening at 12:00 GMT+8. The physical boxes were revealed to contain a U Disk (USB Hard Disc Drive). The final names for Ling's voicebanks were "Chì" ("炽"; official English: "Normal"; literally: "intense", "raging", and "to burn", all of which relates to fire. Alternative literal meanings also include "flourishing" and "prosperous") and "Yōu" ("幽"; official English: "Dark"; literally: "dim", "dark", "bottled up", "quiet", or "tranquil"). Shipment was scheduled for 2023.[18]

Luo Tianyi V5, YANHE V5, and Yuezheng Ling V5 were suddenly released around February 12, 2023 with no prior announcement or post-release acknowledgement. Fans noticed that the products were suddenly shipped around this timeframe. All three were later made available as digital copies on the VOCALOID SHOP on April 26.[19][20]

Package details as noted:

Ling is a youthful and energetic female vocalist. For her VOCALOID5 update, she has two voicebanks: "Chi" (Normal) and "You" (Dark).

Vocal traits as noted:
  • Her VOCALOID shop listing noted that she had energetic and powerful vocals.
  • GWL added.
  • At 160 BPM range in total, both of Ling's V5 voicebanks had the largest tempo of any Chinese VOCALOID released, besting the previous V3 version. This allowed her to cover a massive amount of genres compared to other VOCALOIDs from her language.
  • The V5 voicebanks' recommended ranges (both listed as F2~F4) had decreased compared to the V3 voicebank. Although they were noted to handle a slightly lower range (compared to V3's G2), the upper ranges cannot reach the same as V3 (up to C5).

Individual Vocals[]

Product Information
Optimum Range: F2~F4  Optimum Tempo: 60~220 BPM
  Total Tempo (min-max): 160 BPM  No. of Keys: W ~ 15, B ~ 10, Total ~ 25
Package details as noted:

"Chi" is meant to retain the energetic and youthful tone of Ling's original VOCALOID3 voicebank. It is considered the default vocal of the package.

Vocal traits as noted:
  • The meaning of the voicebank name suggests that her voice is as intense and raging as fire. Ling's V3 voice was regarded to be considerably powerful and was able to project without much issue of being drowned by background music. Thus, Chi's name acknowledges this trait.
    • That said, Chi works well with genres like rock and metal. It is possible that, like her V3 voicebank, Chi may be flexible.
  • The VOCALOID SHOP noted this to be a full and bright voice.
